I have just finished another oil change on my Volvo D5, and thought I would share the procedure in case it helps. Follow these instructions to change the engine oil in all Volvo 5 cylinder diesel engines from 2001 onwards, Volvo models S60, V60, S80, V70, XC60, XC70, XC90, S40, V40, V50, C30, C70 with engines D5, 2.4D, D3, D4, D6.

It is a simple job that would take arround 45 min.

Tools you need:
1. T30 Torx or 12mm socket for the sump splash plate (depends on year)
2. 36mm socket for oil filter housing
3. 17mm socket for sump drain plug
4. New oil filter (volvo part number # 8692305 comes with new sealing o-ring)
5. 7 litres of oil (Check the recomendation for your model / engine / country):

Volvo S40 V50 C30 C70 – Engine Oil Specifications (2004 to 2013)
6. Torque wrench.
7. Container for the old oil (at least 6.5 liters)
8. Oil drain plug washer (size 18x24x1.5 mm / Volvo part number 977751)

Procedure

In my case, I warm the car until operating temperature before changing the oil, as hot oil drains better. After that, turn the engine off and follow this steps:

Step 1. Raise the front of the car. Be sure that it is secure.

Step 2. Remove the lower splash guard. (In my case it was held by 7 x 12mm bolts )

Step 3. Position a container under the engine alligned with the oil plug.

Step 4. Remove the oil plug (17mm socket) and drain the engine oil (If you have drive the car before be caution, as it will be HOT)

Step 5. While oil is draining, from the top of the car, with the 36mm socket remove the oil filter housing cover (located front of engine as marked in yellow in the image below) and replace the filter insert with the new one:how-to-change-engine-oil-volvo-d5-step5

Step 6. Replace the oil filter housing o-ring,  lubricate the O-ring, and reinstall the oil filter housing cover (Tighten to 25nm).how-to-change-engine-oil-volvo-d5-step6

Step 7. Go back to under to under the car, and reinstall the oil plug, tighten it to 35 Nm. Always use a new sealing washer.

Step 8. Fill the engine with the new oil. Check the level in the dipstick and fill until MAX is reached.

Step 9. Start the engine and check for oil leakage. Stop the engine and give the oil some time (10 min.) to run down into the oil pan. Re-check the oil level and top up if needed, but do not overfill.

Step 10. Reinstall the lower splash guard.
