Guide on how to replace the headlight bulbs on Volvo S40 (2004 to 2013), V50 (2004 to 2013), C30 (2006 to 2013) and C70 (2006 to 2013).

Please note that if your car is equiped with Bi-Xenon headlights, Volvo states that due to the high voltage used by these lights, they should only be replaced by an specialized technician.

Removing the headlight housing

To remove the headlight from the car, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the ignition and be sure that lights are switched off.
2. Open the hood.
3. Pull up the pin holding the headlight in place (1 in the picture)
4. From the front of the car, pull the headlight housing from the grill side and then rotate it to loose it from the pin on the outside side of the car (2 in the picture).
5. Disconnect the wiring connector fromt he back of the headlight.

Replace the bulbs

Low beam bulb

1. Once you have the headlight out of the car, remove the back plastic cover, releasing the retaining springs to the side.

2. The low beam bulb is the bulb in the center of the headlight. Release it’s retaining spring by pressing it to the right, and then moving it outward and downward and pull out tue bulb.

High beam and Parking light bulbs (S40 / V50 – pre 07/2007) (C30 – pre 07/2009) (C70 all years)

1. Once you have the headlight out of the car, remove the back plastic cover, releasing the retaining springs to the side.
2. The high beam bulb is the one on nearest to the side of the center of the car in the headlight housing. Turn the bulb holder counterclockwise and pull it out. Replace the bulb.
3. The Parking light bulb is the small bulb near to the high beam bulb. Pull the bulb holder out of the headlight and replace the bulb.
4. When installing the new bulb, it can only be installed in one position, be sure that it is in the correct orientation.

High beam and Parking light bulbs (S40 / V50 – 07/2007 onwards) (C30 – 07/2009 onwards)

1. Once you have the headlight out of the car, remove the small round cover (see image above) on the top of the headlight rotating it counter clockwise.
2. The high beam bulb is the one nearest to the side of the center of the car in the headlight housing. Turn the bulb holder counterclockwise and pull it out. Replace the bulb.
3. The Parking light bulb is the small bulb near to the high beam bulb. Pull the bulb holder out of the headlight and replace the bulb.
4. When installing the new bulb, it can only be installed in one position, be sure that it is in the correct orientation.

Turn signal bulb

1. Turn the bulb holder counterclockwise and remove it.
2. Remove the bulb from the holder by pressing it in and twisting it counterclockwise.
3. Insert a new bulb and reinstall the bulb holder in the headlight housing.

Side marker light


1. Turn the bulb holder counterclockwise, pull it out, and replace the bulb.
2. Reinstall the bulb holder. It can only be installed in one position.

After the defective bulb has been replaced, reinsert the headlightin the reverse order. Check that the retaining pin is correctly inserted and securing the headlight in place

– 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Volvo S40
– 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Volvo V50
– 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 Volvo C30
– 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 Volvo C70
