Follow this tutorial to replace the battery in your Volvo S40 (2004 to 2013), Volvo V50 (2004 to 2013), Volvo C30 (2006 to 2013) and Volvo C70 (2006 to 2013).

Battery type

The specifications for your new battery are:

  • Petrol Engines 4 cylinders: 12v, 62Ah, 520A battery (72 Ah, 600A battery if with RTI or upgraded Sound System )
  • Petrol Engines 5 cylinders: 12v, 72 Ah, 600A battery (80Ah 700A battery if with RTI or upgraded Sound System)
  • Diesel Engines: 12v, 80Ah 700A battery
  • Diesel Engines With Start/Stop: 12v, 70Ah 760A AGM battery

Battery location and replacement

The battery is located in the right side of the engine bay, near the windscreen, under the plastic cover (marked yellow in the image below):

1. If your car is equiped with a strut brace (marked green in the image), push up the plastic covers (marked blue on the image) and remove the 2x nuts on each side securing the strut brace.

2. Pull up and remove the top battery cover

3. With a 10mm socket wrench undo the negative terminal, and remove it from the battery. Next, do the same on the positive terminal.

4. Remove the plastic cable clip (push it up), holding the negative terminal cable, and then put both cables aside.

5. Now remove the front part of the plastic surrounding the battery. The part that is going out is the one marked with yellow arrows in the image below. To remove, you’ll have to push it up.

6. Remove the 2x nuts (purple in the image) for the bracket (green in the image) holding the battery in place. Remove the bracket.

7. You’re now be able to remove the battery and replace with a new one.

To install, reverse this procedure, making sure that you connect the positive cable first.

Torque specs for re-installation:

  • Strut bar M8 nuts (2x each side): 28Nm
  • Battery cable for battery, 6 Nm
  • Battery bracket screws: 10 Nm
