Volvo S60, V70, S80 rear suspension shocks replacement

You can follow this tutorial if you’re about to replace the rear suspension shocks on your Volvo S80 (1998-2006), S60(2000 – 2010), V70 / XC70 (2000 – 2007) .

This is a relatively simple job if you have the right tools and you are used to do some mechanical diy on your car.

Tools needed:
– jack and axle stands
– 18mm spanner
– 17mm spanner / socket
– Torx T40 socket
– Torque wrench (desirable)

Step 0. Jack up the rear of the car and support it on on axle stands. Never work on the car just standing on the jack.

Step 1. Remove the trunk panels to access the top mount.

If your car is a S60 or S80, you’ll need to fold the rear seat backrest forward, then remove the clips holding the side panel of the  compartment and remove the panel and the soundproofing.

If your car is a V70 or XC70, you’ll need to remove the front floor hatch  and then the soundproofing.

Step 2. Remove the nut for the shock absorber upper mounting. You’ll need a 18mm spanner and a T40  Torx wrench as a counterhold.

Step 3. Go under the car and remove the lower bolt for the shock absorber. You’ll need a 17mm socket / spanner.

Step 4. Once the lower bolt is tou, gently push the shock absorber down, it will come out from underneath.

Step 5. Reinstall the new shock absorber in place. Tightening torque the lower mounting bolt to 80Nm, and the upper bolt on the top to 60Nm.
