How to replace remote fob battery in Volvo S40, V40

This tutorial explains how to replace the key fob battery in Volvo S40 and Volvo V40 (1995 to 2004).

If your Volvo remote fob range of transmission is noticeably reduced or if it completely fails to open and close the car as usual, this indicates that the battery is weak and should be replaced.

Depending on your car year there are three different kinds of remote fob styles, all pictured below. (A for cars years 1995 to 1999, B for 1999 to 2003, and C is the integrated key fob for cars years 2003- on cars). See instructions below depending on fob type

Remote fob 1995 to 1999 years (Type A)

Step 1. Open the remote control by twisting a coin in the ring between front and back (leave the
ring in place).
Step 2. Replace the batteries (2x type CR 2016 3v batteries) with the plus side down

Remote fob 1999 to 2003 years (Type B)

Step 1. Open the remote control by twisting a coin in the ring between front and back (leave the
ring in place).
Step 2. Replace the batteries. (2x type CR 2016 3v batteries)

Remote fob 2003 to 2004 years (Type C)

Step 1. Open the remote control by twisting a coin in the ring between the front and rear sections (leave the ring in place).
Step 2. Replace the batteries (2x type CR 2025 3v batteries), with the plus-side upward.
Step 3. Reinstall the cover, making sure it is secured tightly

Do not use CR2025 in type A fob. Batteries are too thick. Use CR2016 instead.

  • Our PH1 S40 has remote fob similar to the Type A above. BUT! It has CR2016 cells and the case won't close with CR2025 cells.
