You are correct that there is a step missing, albeit a simple one. There is a hold down bracket on the right side of the battery at the bottom on the battery tray that is removed with a 12mm socket wrench. When that bracket has been removed, then the battery can be lifted out.

My XC70 has a further bracket fastened to the floor, to RHS of battery. i.e. a further 10mm screw to undo and THEN the battery pulls out no problem.

If you did all previous items, at that point you just need to put cables aside and pull the battery out.
