Tutorial with instructions on how to replace the front brake pads and discs on your Volvo S40 or V40 (1995 to 2004)

Tools Needed: 12 and 15 mm spanner, caliper wind tool.

Time: 40 minutes

Step 1. Jack your car up and make sure that it is securely supported.

Step 2. Remove the front wheel.

Step 3. With a 12mm spanner remove the bolts (marked A in picture) securing the caliper. (If they rotate freely you might need to secure the inner part with a 15mm spanner, in my case it wasn’t needed.)

Step 4. Remove the caliper out of the way, this will allow you to remove the brake pads.

Step 5. With the 15mm spanner remove the two bolts securing the caliper holder from behind (marked B in picture)  and remove the caliper holder.

Once you get here, you should have all old parts out of the car, and be ready to install new ones.

Step 6. Insert the new brake disc in place.

Step 7. Re-install the caliper holder securely tighten the two bolts.

Step 8. Wind the piston in to get space to fit the new pads.

Step 9. Insert the new brake pads in place. Be sure that you install the one with the little metalic bit onto the rear, with the metalic bit on the lower side.

Step 10. Re-install the caliper bolts, securely tighten (If it rotate freely you might need to secure the inner part with a 15mm spanner, in my case it wasn’t needed).

Re-install the wheel back on and you’re done!
